Biography

Ethan is a PhD student at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies. He completed his BA Honours degree at the University of Guelph in Criminal Justice and Public Policy and then went on to complete his MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy at Guelph.

Ethan’s research is concerned with studying Canada’s bail system and the recent pressure to securitize pretrial release through policies like C-48 that introduced "tough on crime" amendments to enhance community safety and restore public confidence in the justice system. Ethan is particularly concerned with how these policies impact the experiences of both the accused and the justice actors that have the power and authority to make release decisions.
