Biography

Filzah is pursuing the Doctor in Civil Laws' program at the Faculty of Law, McGill University. She takes a keen interest in constitutional law, fundamental freedoms, and how developments in technology have impacted constitutional freedoms. Her doctoral thesis focuses on the right to political participation on social media platforms. Being an internationally trained lawyer, Filzah has gained legal education beyond Canada, which also gave her the opportunity to begin her academic career in international waters. During her Master of Laws (LLM) at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto, she continued to gain more teaching experience while also studying public law courses. Her core interest lies in studying fundamental freedoms in several disciplines. For instance, she has explored how public consultation in terms of impact assessment could be facilitated through internet platforms in her environmental law course. Similarly, she worked on a paper arguing the need for a constitutional right to healthy environment in Canada, which subsequently got published. Taking her interest in teaching and research followed, Filzah also served as the Editor-in-Chief for McGill’s Graduate Law Student Association Research Series 2024-25. Outside of her work, you will find her learning French (her sixth language so far!) or looking for the next best coffee in Toronto for an Instagram coffee journal that she runs with her friends.
