About Our Graduate Studies

The Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies offers degrees at both the Master’s and Doctoral level.  The MA and PhD programs provide students with a broad foundation of academic training and insight into criminological issues.

Recent graduates from the MA program have found employment in a wide range of occupations:

  • The criminal justice system
  • Government
  • Private business

Others already employed have been able to upgrade their qualifications in pursuit of promotions, and some have moved into new positions (such as college-level teaching) as a result of completing their MA.

Students from the Master’s program have most often taken on contract and full-time work in policy and research analysis. They are:

  • Researchers
  • Probation and parole officers
  • Correctional workers
  • Facilitators
  • Agents of social service organizations
  • Consultants in private business

Although there is no professional or practicum component to the graduate program and there is no job placement officer, we organize career workshops and networking opportunities for our MA students.

Graduates of the PhD program have enjoyed great success in the academic job market. Most former PhD students are now employed in academic positions in universities and colleges. Some have become senior policy analysts and research officers in government and private business.

The Centre’s Master of Arts program was developed in 1971 and the PhD program was established in 1989.
