CrimSL Speaker Series features the Honourable Harold Lovell, Antigua and Barbuda

December 11, 2024 by Patricia Doherty

On November 27, 2024, the Honourable Harold Lovell, Antigua and Barbuda, presented the public lecture entitled "Reflections on law, human rights and democratic leadership in contemporary Caribbean life" as part of the CrimSL Speaker Series.

Lovell spoke briefly about his early life as a young geography teacher before outlining the main thrust of his talk:

Firstly, I look at the dominant discourse, what I refer to as the dominant discourse or the colonial discourse.

I examine some of the instances of resistance to the colonial inscription which had morphed into a form of political capitalism with a profoundly undemocratic ethos.

Finally, I explore the possibility of rethinking our Caribbean democracy towards a more emancipatory outcome.

- Harold Lovell

Following the lecture, Lovell was joined by Dr. Ann Lopez, Director of the Centre for Leadership and Diversity at OISE/UT and Dr. Kamari Clarke, CrimSL Director, for a panel discussion.

The lecture was held at the Nexus Lounge on OISE's 9th floor, and was co-sponsored by the Centre for Leadership and Diversity at OISE/UT and the Transnational Justice Project.

A reception followed.
