Congratulations to Dr. Fernando Avila, who successfully defended his thesis, “The Scars Remain: Power, Solidarity, and Punishment in an Atypical Latin American Prison,” on April 18, 2023. His thesis was passed “As Is.”
Avila's beautifully written ethnographic study of Punta de Rieles prison makes a significant contribution to the international literature on punishment and society.
His supervisor, Kelly Hannah-Moffat, thanks the members of the examining committee including Richard Sparks (External Examiner, University of Edinburgh), Paula Maurutto (Internal/External Examiner), Mariana Valverde (Internal/External Examiner), the committee members Phillip Goodman and Gail Super, as well as the Defence Chair, Fiorella Foscarini.
