By invitation of the President of the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association (FNCPA), Professor Beatrice Jauregui and PhD Candidate Roxy Shlapak presented "Forging collaborative research partnerships: future directions in First Nations policing" at FNCPA's Annual General Meeting on November 7, 2023, in Richmond, BC.
The two have been conducting ethnographic research on self-administered policing in some Indigenous communities over the past couple of years. Shlapak is currently doing fieldwork in Akwesasne as part of her dissertation research on the history and sociology of self-administered policing there.
The presentation was an opportunity to share some of the work they have been doing with the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) and with other First Nations police leaders.
The visit also facilitated conversations about future CrimSL research collaborations with First Nations police services and First Nations police associations.
Jauregui is Associate Professor and Graduate Administrator at CrimSL. Shlapak is a PhD Candidate under the supervision of Professor Scot Wortley.
